Teen Rockers: Anaya
My name’s Anaya Tyler, I’m 15, and i live ijs Southern California. I don’t have a job because, again, I’m 15, but I’d like to be a forensic psychologist or a lawyer. I’ve been natural my whole life. (Unless the 10 times my mother forced me to straighten my hair with a hot comb count as unnatural, in which case, the answer is off and on for 15 years).
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
I really started liking my hair when I was around 11 because I thought the shrinkage was really cool. Also, my friend got a perm and all her hair started to fall out so that was a big encouragement to stay natural(she went natural too ).
What are your current hair goals?
Waist length hair without straightening it.
Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
WEN® ANTI-FRIZZ STYLING CREME. It left my hair way too hard and crunchy.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
Comb it dry, (with a bit of conditioner on the comb of course) and slick it up ( which can actually be achieved using just conditioner, no edge control needed) into a high, huge, puff.
How do you protect you hair at night?
I don’t do much. I just comb it wet, and put it in a French braid.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Lifetime of compliments.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Don’t give up because your hair isn’t cooperating, or because whatever product you’re using isn’t working, or because your arms hurt from holding them up for 15 minutes while doing your hair. Because in little while, people will be dying to touch your hair, and will be giving you countless compliments, and you’ll be gorgeous and HAPPY. And that’s the reason you went natural in the first place right?
If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?
“Stop using gel you idiot. And no, curly hair doesn’t mean your great grandma is Chinese. You’re black, accept it. Yes. Shrinkage is very cool.”
