Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Tawn

Hi there! My name is Tawn, and I am 33 years old. I currently reside in Chandler, AZ. I am a mother of two wonderful girls, and hold a 9-5 job, but the thing I love most is what I do in my spare time- I am a curl counselor for wonderful ladies who need some guidance with their varying curls. To further that passion, I am pursuing a license in cosmetology, specializing in curly hair! I have been natural most of my life, having only had a relaxer once (and hating it. I got burned- BAD)

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
The inspiration to be natural stemmed from a rather unfortunate insistence. I was bullied every day for three years by kids in the African American community that called my hair nappy, and unruly, and ugly because it wasn’t straight. I tried to tame and straighten and pretend I didn’t have these curls, but when I split from an ex who also deemed my curls unattractive, I decided enough was enough. It was time to love MYSELF and this meant loving these curls once and for all.

Top three products and prices.
Miss Jessies Pillow Soft Curls $16
Camille Rose Natural Curlaide $16
Nubian Heritage Indian Hemp and Temanu growth and strengthen masque $11

Fave go to hairstyle.
I wish I had more, but I honestly my wash and go is my favorite.

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
I get asked this a LOT! I would name her Tru. She’s my more edgy and dare I say- more fun- alter ego.

Have you ever tried hair shadowing?
I JUST tried hair shadowing! Love it, and I will be doing this more often. Did I say I love it? I. Love. It. (Check out my insta for my recent first try EVER)

If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
I do have a base color that doesn’t pick up well on camera. I have a dark burgundy type ombre in my hair. Redken!

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Challenging. Wonderful. Empowering.

Any advice to the natural newbies?
Patience my loves! You and your hair will have knock down drag out fights. Fights. Be patient and learn your curls. Remember that you are asking them to do a complete turn around from what you had previous trained them to do for months..years..lifetimes! Give them some time, and when you feed a nurture them, I promise they will comply.
Most of the time. 😉

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
My favorite compliment has always been when people say that they see ME when I wear my hair in its natural state. It confirms that I am right where I belong in this skin, and it reminds me that the original version of myself is far better than one I could have tried to create.

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
I don’t watch many natural hair vloggers, but I recently came across Andreas Choice and I really feel like we could be friends. She’s the bees knees.

Finish this sentence:

I Rock My Natural because it is a representation of what I have become. When I was shamed for my hair, it was a statement that I cannot and will not hide who I am. A love letter to myself that beauty must first be manifested in my heart before it will ever become valuable to my ears.
