Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Tawanda
My name is Tawanda Johnson. I’m 33 years old and currently reside in Atlanta, GA. I am the Editor-In-Chief of CurlyChristians.com, the blog where Christ, curls and fashion collide. I also manage my personal natural hair blog TJLuvsBeingNatural.com and work in Marketing. I have been natural for almost four wonderful years. The start of my natural hair journey has lead me right into my purpose and I’ve been having a ton of fun along the way.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
After a long journey trying to conceive, suffering 4 losses before my miracle baby boy came along in January 2011, I decided it was time to start a new journey full of fun, liberation and excitement. After 3 months of transitioning I dove right into my first big chop and haven’t looked back since.
What are your current hair goals?
My goal is to keep my hair healthy while experimenting and learning more and more about just how amazing my hair is. After 3 years of focusing on growth, which was wonderful, I’ve started focusing more on different looks and styles. I’m not at all afraid of scissors, clippers or color!
Top 3 products and prices.
That’s a tough one. I love trying new products and I use such a mixed bag of brands. I’m going to go with my current top 5 products if that’s ok.
Shampoo: Shea Moisture Curl & Style. I always catch this on bogo at Walgreens!
Leave-in Conditioner: Cantu Leave-In. Very reasonably priced at around $7 Walgreens
Masque: Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen Grow 7 Restore Treatment: I catch this one on bogo at Walgreens too.
Moisturizer: Camille Rose Moisture Milk. This was about $13 at Target
Gel: Dark and Lovely Gel ‘N Butter. I got this product in my first curlBOX. The subscription is just $25 an AMAZING value.
Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
Besides a relaxer? Hmmm. I can tell you what I’ll never NOT use again. My Denman brush! My only true staple product. Just gotta have it.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
I live for updos. I guess you could call a high topknot my go to style. But you’ll be hard pressed to find two in my photo collection that are the same.
How do you protect you hair at night?
I put it in a ponytail, twist the pony tail, band it and sleep in a satin scarf.
Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be? Lol. No. I’ve never thought about this. Hmm? I honestly don’t know. What do you think?
If your hair is colored what do you use to do so? I had my hair professionally colored once. I blogged about the complete process. You can find it here
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Fun, liberating and inspiring
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Don’t focus on how different or more difficult it is compared to relaxed hair. Focus on the fact that it’s healthier, more versatile and was gifted to you by God. Love your tresses!
What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
“Your hair looks different every day! How do you do that?” To me, normal is boring. I like to mix it up and keep things interesting, but most of all I love to inspire others. To know that I accomplish that and that others take notice is very rewarding.
If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?
It’s so much more awesome than you could ever imagine!
Do you have a favorite YouTube Vlogger?
Loving JFashiongirl87 right now.
