Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Neen
My name is Neen. I’m a 25-year-old South Floridian & I currently serve in the capacity of an adult ESOL instructor for a living. I am also a dreamer, artist, naturalista, jokester & soon-to-be full-time graduate student. I enjoy random beach trips, the sinful combination of peanut-butter & chocolate, movie nights & full moons. I’ve been natural for about 10 years now & do not plan to change that anytime soon.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
My mother inspired me to go natural again so I did the big chop when I was about 15. I’d always loved my natural tresses & didn’t understand why she permed them in the first place.
Top three products and prices.
Coconut oil – $8
Grapeseed oil – $7
Peppermint oil – $4
Fave go to hairstyle.
I adore my pin-less pompadour just as much as I love a huge & high messy bun.
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
I would actually name each loc because they all have their own individual characteristics & feel. However, as a collective, I would probably name my crown Glory or Bontuu [Oromo for “proud”].
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
My hair was colored eons ago. I believe I used Clairol’s Texture Tones in CherryWood on several of my strands & ends. I have also lightened a couple of my ends with the same brand/product.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Love. Acceptance. Empowerment.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Don’t be afraid of your own hair! Learn to touch it, feel it & embrace it. Figure out its needs & wants. Don’t be reluctant to try new things. Be robust in your journey & have fun with it. Hair is divinely intimate so be careful of who you let touch it or style it. Try to become the go-to person for your mane. It will serve you well in the long run. At the end of the day, while you can’t always trust the energy of others, you should be able to rest assured knowing that you can trust your own.
What is your favorite compliment that someone has given you on your hair?
“Your hair looks way too good to be yours.” While, it may have been an underhanded compliment, I appreciated it nonetheless. The disbelief & astonishment tickled me.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
Chescalocs for certain! She’s silly, versatile & self-maintains like I do. She offers a variety of tips & styles for all lengths & loc thicknesses.
Finish this sentence:
I Rock My Natural because my crown is a reflection of who I was, am & am becoming all at once. It is a reflection of queens of the past & queens of the future all while being authentically me. It is a versatile testimony of my divine lineage & rich heritage. I don’t think there’s anything better out here to rock than that.
Keep Rockin Neen!
