Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Natalie
Hi Everyone! My name is Natalie Reneé or Nat or Nana, whichever you want more! I’ve lived for 21 years now in Miami. Currently I’m on hold since my surgery on my torn ACL and both meniscus /: But once I’m off my crutches and on my feet I’ll be working on branding myself while in school studying Market Communications!
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
Much thanks to both of my parents, (Haitian Parents), my hair has always been at the state it is in now! So I wouldn’t consider myself as natural since today, natural hair is defined by women who big chop or transition. Though I would say that my mother convinced me to keep my curls big and beautiful.
Growing up, I hated having my hair all over the place, I preferred to drown my hair with gel enough that gravity didn’t exist! It was really ridiculous, but that was the tomboy in me. I kept my hair in two Snoop Dogg braids or a high ponytail twisted down. Later on throughout middle school, my close friend Anisa wore her hair exactly like Chaka Khan. She would always shake all the crunch outta my hair and literally force me to wear it big. Then it caught on and I began styling my hair with less gel and more picking thanks to Anisa!
What are your current hair goals?
I have a semi-lengthy list of hair goals.
- NO DYE!
- Maintenance knowledge.

Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie, I HATE IT! It works for plenty of girls on Youtube, my hair just doesn’t have time for it. It gives my hair beautiful shine and spring but VOLUME ? …. WHERE YOU AT? I can never achieve volume with this product what so ever, why? I’ve tried on damp hair, on soaking wet hair, while I’m still in the shower! Once my air dry is complete, I begin to pick my hair out and nothing. Just breaking intact curls and creating a nasty dead frizz. Without picking it, it’s beautiful but flat. Actually have a picture of my hair with the product in.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
My Go-To hair style would be my oversized mushroom bun. It catches the most eyes and too many questions of my hair being my hair or not.
All I do is either on Day two hair or fresh air dried hair. I’ll pick out the ends for volume. Tie a ponytail nearly on the top of my head. And bobby pin the ends of my hair to my hair and sleek down some curly side burns.
I really don’t do well in caring for my hair besides staying away form heat as much as possible and sleeping with my Satin Pillow Case. I’m very lazy when it comes to down time with this hair. Sleeping in pineapples suck for me too, my hair doesn’t have any respect for me whenever I try sleeping in a pineapple. So definitely my satin pillow and no heat rescues my mane!
Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
HA! Umm, I would name my hair Huburt. Only because I would drive my moms car top down and air dry my hair and I named her car Huburt.
If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?
No color just Black.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
GIVE THEM MORE
Finally big curly natural hair is getting the recognition it deserves so don’t be shy to share your hair with the world. Growth may take some time, but the wait will be worth it at the end. Your hair can never be duplicated, remember God gave you curls for a reason!
What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
“OMG!! Your hair look exactly like ( insert curly wig name here ), can I touch it? Do you have it on??”
You’re loving gel a bit to much sugar. Lets stop doing that, and stop with the hair dye, you know you’re going back to black hair anyways. Thanks
