Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Monroe

Hi! My name is Monroe and I’m twenty years old I travel between New York and Boston right now, because I’m a full time college student. I’ve been natural all my life, but it wasn’t until I was about ten years old that I was allowed to grow my hair out and at eighteen I started going blonde.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

I didn’t necessarily get inspired by anyone person. I really felt as though I couldn’t live without my long curly hair or as my friends have called it the crown. My hair really was never processed ever until I started dyeing it blonde. However, I have done the big chop a few times to revive my hair every four years hahaha.

Top three products and prices.

My top three products I live by would be:

Shea moisture- Raw Shea Butter shampoo 12.0floz  $10-15

TRESemme Moisture Conditioner 32.0floz  $4-5

Got2b rise n’ shine whipped moose 8.8floz $6

Fave go to hairstyle.

My every day hairstyle really would just be a wash-and-go with a little moose for hold and I let my hair bloom. It tends to do that anyway lol.

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?

If I had to give my hair a name it would be Ru, now not rue like i rue the day but ru as in Rupual, because he has inspired my activism and is always usually blonde .

Have you ever tried hair shadowing? Deep Conditioning Color? Splat washables?

I have tried splat and I prefer the more subtle colors for my hair.

If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?

Really my old faithful coloring product line is L’Oreal from color to developer and toners.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.

 Humbling, Praised and misunderstood

Any advice to the natural newbies?

-Soft water is your friend

-condition always

-deep condition half as much

-and oils only after you deep condition

My biggest advice is to invest in a water softener shower head, because your water is what can really make or break you hair, I can’t stress that enough. Also embrace hair and get to know your texture everyone has different textures and if you embrace, love and take good care of your hair and its natural texture. Aka co-wash three times a week and shampoo at most twice you can never go wrong.

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

My favorite compliment some one has ever given me on my hair would have to be “your hair is giving me so much life!”

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?

If I could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube it would have to be Taren Guy, the reason being, though in my opinion she is at a solid B+ in at (at home hairstyles) and things of that nature, she took the time to not only give you the at home aspect, but a professionals look at taking care of us naturals.
