Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Ilianna
Hey, my name is Ilianna Ayala, but I go by iLLy. I’m 22 and from New York City, specifically East Harlem. I’m currently a MAC Cosmetics Makeup Artist while being a full time student at Queens College. I’m studying Dance and Urban Studies. I have been natural since January 2013. I started my journey exactly on New Years! New Year, Healthy Hair.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
Instagram! I always go on Instagram to see make-up looks and beauty stuff, and I came across a page that showed nothing but beautiful girls with curly hair. I fell in love! Then I went on YouTube and Google and searched “how to get your curls back”, since I have serious heat damage. And I mean serious! I was too scared to chop off my hair, so I sucked it up and went through the transition while getting trims to take off the dead ends. I definitely went through the awkward stage but it was worth it.
What are your current hair goals?
My main goal is to maintain my hairs health. I think my hair is at its healthiest and I definitely want to keep it that way. I also want to grow my hair to my lower back/waist by the end of this year.
Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
“As I Am” line! It really didn’t work out for my hair. My hair felt dry and rough.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
How do you protect you hair at night?
I sleep with my Leopard Print silk bonnet that I love with all my heart !
Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
I dont have a name for my hair but if I had to give it a name it would be Fizzy.
If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?
I actually go to a friend of mine that specializes in curly hair. I’m not sure what she used but I did make sure that she didn’t damage my hair
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Best choice ever !
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Set your goal, and be realistic about it. For example, if you’re trying to reduce the amount of heat you use on your hair instead of straightening every 2 weeks, do it once a month. Until eventually you don’t do it all. Baby steps. Also do your research. Test out new products until you find your match. It’s a process but it will all be worth it at the end.
What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
Actually a coworker of mine said that she loves my hair and would want to introduce a niece to me because she hates her hair and she feels if she see me, she will start loving it.
If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?
Love your hair. EVERYBODY can have straight hair. Either your born with it or you use straighteners or relaxers to get it straight. But not everyone can have your curly hair, which makes you unique.
