Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Awa

My name is Awa Jawo. I am 21. I live in Verona, Wisconsin. I am originally from The Gambia, West Africa. I came to The United States for college two years ago. I am an accounting major and now a junior in college. I have been natural since November 2013.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

My sister inspired me to go natural. She has been natural since 2003. She had been trying to get me to go natural for over 10 years but coming from a country where it is deviant to refuse to perm your hair, it was hard for me to picture a life without straight hair and I always thought natural hair was too much work and too boring because the styles were too limited.

Some time in November 2013, my sister was on her way to the store when I asked her to get me a perm because I had new growth that needed straightening. She repeated her anti perm rant for the umpteenth time but I ignored her and asked her to get my favorite brand! She came back home with the perm any way but it was too late to do it that night. I was busy with work and school for the next few weeks so I didn’t have a few hours to spare to perm my hair. I was forced to find a way to work with my natural hair until I had time. During this time, I realized that taking care of my natural hair was not that bad. So I decided to brave it out and do my big chop!

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?

Have you ever tried hair shadowing??? Deep Conditioning Color? Splat washables??

I have always wanted to try out hair color but I was skeptical about the brand to you and the color to try. So I did lots of hair shadowing. I started by using eye shadows on the tip of my twist outs and I loved how it made my hair look. I went ahead and tried out the Manic Panic Fuchsia Shock cream hair dye. I mixed it with my conditioner and applied it. I loved the results but because of the mess it left in my bathroom I was hesitant to do a retouch after it faded.

If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

I get a lot of “Your hair gives me life!”. Hahaaa! If I have to take that literally, that is definitely the greatest compliment ever!

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?

Naptural85. She is the first YouTube channel I subscribed to. I feel we have a similar hair type so watching her tutorials and seeing how she cares for her hair gives me ideas on how to care for mine. Lol and her techniques always works for me.
