Rockin Naturals You May Not Know But Should: Anike

My name is Anike Akin (my whole last name is Akinmurele but would prefer to be listed as “Akin”) and I am a 41 year old African-African-American (I get two Africans because my father is NigerianJ ) mother of one 15 year old son. I work as an office manager and have been natural for 12 years.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

I was inspired to go natural due to chemical induced alopecia and because of my love for and admiration of Lauryn Hill. I had been perming my hair for about 15 years with no issues and all of the sudden my scalp became sensitive to the chemicals in perms and would be sore and scabby for weeks after perming.  I tried several different perms but gave up when I started developing bald spots due to them.  I have always loved Lauryn Hill and was often told I looked like her when I was younger so she was my inspiration to go natural at a time when friends and family were begging me not to.  I have 0 patience when it comes to my hair and did a big chop one day when I began taking out my braids I had had in for a couple of months. All of the sudden it hit me…. I can cut these out, not have to spend hours taking them down and be rid of all of these tired straggly permed ends I have.  What a Win-Win….SCIZZORS PLEASE!

Top three products and prices.

My top natural hair product is Nature’s Blessing Hair Pomade.  I have been using and swearing by this since I had permed hair.  It is $4.99 a bottle and is now easily found at local beauty supply stores. My second favorite product is Carol’s Daughter Khoret Amen Oil.  This worked wondered on my scalp and helped bring back my hair in spots that was totally bald when I was restoring it from the damage caused by chemical induced alopecia. I use it to this day to keep my edges strong and healthy. I also oil my entire scalp with it from time to time and get in a hot steamy shower with a plastic cap which acts as a hot oil treatment.  Unfortunately Carol’s daughter no longer sells this oil alone but only as a part of a kit, Olive Oil Infusion – $17.00, which also has a thick creamy conditioner that’s great for loose natural hair but too rich for locs. Soooo I have to buy the kit and share the conditioner with a friend because I just must have Khoret Amen Oil in my life.  The last of my top 3 products is also by Carol’s Daughter – Tui Color Care Moisturizing Hair Oil.  This is $14 for a 4.3 oz bottle. I use this as needed to make my colored locks pop and keep them happy so the color doesn’t cause breakage. I also add a little of this on my locs themselves along with oiling my scallop with Khoret Amen for a great hot oil treatment for my scalp and locs.

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?

Black Cherry

Have you ever tried hair shadowing?

I don’t even know what this means – LOL. Will Google it though… *Check out my Hair Shadowing Tab 🙂

If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?

My stylist uses Wella permanent and Adore rinse to achieve the shades of red and deep pink my locs are highlighted with.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.

Thankful for Enlightening

Any advice to the natural newbies?

Getting to know your natural hair can be a process which is often frustrating at first but hang in there and it will get easier.  Embrace and enjoy your natural hair at every stage and at every length!

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

On two different occasions when I was sporting my locs curly and wild little Caucasian girls, both under the age of 5 or so, have told me or pointed out to their mother that I looked like Medusa.  The mothers looks so horrified but I just smiled and thanked them because they didn’t mean any harm and one of them even said it was “cool like Medusa” Yesssss, natural black hair is COOL!

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?

Naptural85 is the only natural hair vlogger I watch with any frequency and this is because I just love her hair and what she does with it and she seems to have an amazing spirit.

Finish This Sentence:

I rock my natural because it’s the way I feel most comfortable and confident!
