Rockin Naturals: Shatera
Name: Shatera Taylor
Location: Clifton, New Jersey
What you do for a living?
I am currently a social worker for the mental health community and a mentor to the youths.
How long have you been natural?
I’ve been natural almost three years (BC: 9/15/12)
What or Who inspired you to go natural?
My cousin Ursula. She’s been encouraging me to go natural for the longest time. She used to compliment my hair when it was relaxed and stated that it would be even more FLAWLESS if it were all natural. Just seeing her hair and how versatile our hair can be, amazed me and helped with my decision to go forth with my journey.
Did you bc or transition?
BIG CHOP….I went with the YOLO slogan and chopped chopped chopped lol. Thanks to my beautician for taking those pair of scissors and chopping it all off. No turning back now. The BEST decision of my life.
What are your current hair goals?
To continue this beautiful journey and allowing my hair to be its own entity….it makes its own statement. I’m just here to continue maintaining and loving every moment of his journey….kinks and all. Team Natural….boom boom POW!!!
Top 3 products and prices:
-Cantu Shea Moisturizer $7.99
-Queen Heleen’s Deep Conditioner $10.99
-The rest is homemade using avocado, EVOO (Extra Virgin Olive Oil), honey etc.
Very low maintenance when it comes to hair products. I keep it simple as possible.
Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again?
Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Shampoo and Conditioner.
Why? It dried my hair out badly.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
Well of course, my two strand twist out. I love the definition when unraveling them and the fullness it gives when it’s a day or two old.
How do you protect you hair at night?
I have a satin pillow case, satin scarf and bonnet. I do big chunks of twists at night just to maintain some of its definition.
FYI: I also have a satin bonnet on my head rest in my car.
Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
Lol! I thought I was weird giving my mane a name….so glad you asked as she does have a name. Say hello to, “Queen Pultrichude,” meaning Queen beauty (thanks to a dear friend for introducing me to this word). My hair defines strength, beauty and versatility. It gets no better than that. It stands on it’s own. I’m blessed to be able to wear this crown.
If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?
My beautician would not allow me to put ANY color in my hair. She said it would take away from its natural texture. So I stay far far away. Not knocking anyone who does. I love colors but would rather let my hair rock her own natural color.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
BOOM: when your hair hits that road block. You get frustrated. It’s going to happen. I call it the “Natural Blues”.
POW: Own your journey….love and embrace that hair. Stay consistent with your routines….so that way you can…
SLAY…..slay that hair style….own it hunty….embrace it.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Be patient, never do your hair under stress, and don’t become a product junkie. Embrace the journey and be consistent, which is key. Love your hair and it will love you back! BOOM!
What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
You got that sooouuuullll glow. (Coming to America line) people are fascinated by how shiny it looks and how the texture is so soft but thick.
If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?
Your hair is FABULOUS darling….work it hunty….love and embrace it hunty….boom boom POW!!!
Do you have a favorite YouTube Vlogger?
CharyJay….I call her my twin lol.
Finish this sentence:
I Rock My Natural because it stands and speak volumes. It is its own statement….it defines it’s own beauty and strength. And that is who I am. Thanks Queen Pultrichude…….my natural ROCKS!!!!
