Rockin Naturals: Sharlene-Monique

My name is Sharlene-Moniqué and I am singer, dancer, speaker, traveler…! I am many things but I work in a school leading assemblies and gospel choir. I travel around Europe working for a company called ‘Gospel Matters’ leading choir workshops with the company’s founder Karen Gibson and I love it. My passion is to encourage and inspire people and that’s what those workshops are about along with singing. I enjoy working out, dancing and blogging for ‘Be Uniquely You’: I started my blog to empower women to love who they are and I’m very passionate about helping women realize their value. It includes interviews, inspirational and fashion post’s.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
When my sister  went natural I was blown away by how amazing her hair was. I also spent a hear studying in America and met some gorgeous natural ladies there who encouraged me to give it a go. I did big chop and transition for 6 months. To be honest I was bored of relaxers and wanted a change and I’m loving the journey.
What are your current hair goals?
I am coming up to 3 years natural but I cut my hair into a tapered style January 2015. I am growing it out  In a heart shape and I recently colored my hair so my goals are for it to be healthy, shiny and strong. I’m not to fussed about length.
 Top 3 products and prices.
Raw She butter from Ghana 2kg £30
Cantu deep treatment masque £5.99
Crème of nature argon oil – £3.99
Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
Yes I bought aubury organics b9 gel and my hair hated it. It’s a very strange consistency very watery,  really didn’t like it.
Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
My twist out is my go weekly style and when it gets old a high puff. Although I am trying to not do put pressure on my edges at the moment.
How do you protect you hair at night?
I wear a satin bonnet
Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
I don’t but I would call it beautiful ;0)
If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?
My stylist (and sister) put some copper highlights in and she just used bleach. My hair was dyed jet black so we couldn’t use a packaged product like crème of nature. If it wasn’t dyed that’s what I would have used.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Hard, enjoyable, rewarding
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Natural hair is like wine and it gets better over a period of time. My hair has changed so much since my big chop. It was dry and unruly but now with TLC it’s soft and manageable. Have some patience.
Do you have a favorite YouTube Vlogger?
It would have to be My Natural Sister’s. They are really good friends of mine in my head, lol! I love there channel and the encouragement they bring. I have been inspired to try so many styles from their tutorials.
Finish this sentence:
I Rock My Natural because Its a great feeling to actually love the hair God created me with.
Keep Rockin Sharlene!!!

  • Great article and gorgeous photos Shar! If I wasn’t already natural (have been for over a decade now) I would be tempted to give it a go. Contrary to what a lot of people think, there’s so much you can do with natural hair.
