Rockin Naturals: Deidra

Introduction

My name is Deidra , I’m 27, born in Huntington Long Island, NY. Moved to Houston, TX with my parents and siblings when I was 4. Really I’ve been natural my entire life. Although when I was about, 7 or 8 my mom ran a perm through my hair which made my hair extremely straight. We (me and my sisters) were my moms experiments. But no i didn’t regularly get perms growing up. Maybe 5 in my entire life. To this day I am natural since 2009.

How do you protect you hair at night?

You see, this is my biggest dilemma. I try scarves but I can’t seem to wake up with them on. Once upon a time I had a satin bonnet but my husband threw it away, he hated how unattractive it was for bed. I don’t blame him lol but I do miss my bonnet. More than likely ill be investing in a satin pillow case. I still put scarfs on at night.

Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
Never thought of this question before.  Sunshine

If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?

It was brown with highlights. I still have some color left behind on top not the sides, those were cut low. I Went to visible changes so what ever they use in their salons.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words
Wild! Expressive! Free!
What Advice could you give to the Natural Newbies?
Find what works for your hair. Drink water eat well and try to not have your hands in your head, if you’re trying to achieve growth. Don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. You’re you and your hair is a direct extension of what YOU put into it. Patience, gentleness and moisturizer. And if you decide to go the route of coloring your hair. Please make sure you understand the possible risks you taking with that. I colored my hair quite a bit in 2014 and at the beginning of this year 2015 and I am starting over because I over colored my hair. So be careful about that!

What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
In the nail shop and the woman next to me says, what hair is that? Before i could respond her friend goes, oh girl thats jerry curl, i just had that had that hair in. i smirked and said well, i guess you could say jerry curl but this grew out my head. we all cracked up laughing. Made me feel good bc my curls were on their best behavior that day.

If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?
stop messing in your hair so much, chill on the pony tails and stop being impulsive.
Do you have a favorite YouTube Vlogger?
