Rockin Naturals: Ann Marie

AnnMarie B, 23, NYC, full time natural hair enthusiast. I’ve been natural for years now, my last perm was over 10 years ago & it’s been 2 years since I’ve embraced my curls & went heat free.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
I battled with a skin condition called eczema my whole life, I had it all over even on my scalp. One day I got a perm, a wash & set then wrapped my hair. The next day my scalp had pussed so bad that all my hair clumped together to the point that I couldn’t even unwrap my hair! Since that day I told myself that I needed to leave the chemicals ALONE! I ended up transitioning till my new growth reached my chin then I chopped the straight ends off.

What are your current hair goals?

Since I’ve gone heat free my hair grew from collarbone length to mid back length. Now I’m shooting for waist length, I’m about 4 inches away! Besides length, healthy hair is always the main goal especially since I have color treated hair.

 Top 3 products and prices.

Tresemme Naturals Conditioner $5, Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-In $12, and Dark & Lovely Deep Conditioning Delight $10

Is there a product you have used that you would NEVER use again? Why?
I try to stay away from anything containing alcohol & silicones. My hair gets super dry and dryness + my color = breakage so I tend to use all natural products.

Do you have a favorite go to hairstyle?
My favorite go to hair style is a flat twistout. It’s easy, lasts forever & gives me great definition & curl pattern.

How do you protect you hair at night?

At night I always make sure I pineapple my hair with a satin bonnet. I’m thinking about getting satin pillow cases as well for the extra protection throughout the night.

Do you have a name for your hair or If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
Her name is Amber.

If your hair is colored what do you use to do so?

I got my hair professionally done. It was a process of a few colors in order to get the tone that my hair is now.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Exciting, patience, beautiful

Any advice to the natural newbies?

Patience is key! Hair goals worth having will not come overnight, it takes a lot of time & care. Most importantly, never compare! No 2 curls are the same, learn to love your tresses. We’re all queens wearing natural God given crowns.

What is your favorite compliment you have ever been given on your hair?
Any & all compliments I get are my fav! I appreciate every single compliment from everyone.

If you could tell your younger self NOW something about your natural hair THEN what would that be?

I would tell myself & my mom to NEVER EVER perm my hair! I would also tell myself to love my natural features despite what people & society try to make us think what “beauty” really is.
