Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should:Nikia
My name is Nikia, 31 and I currently live in Houston, Texas. I’m a stay at home Mommy to a 4 year old curly haired monster & a 3 month old whose curls are just starting to form. I have been natural all my life, however harsh bleaching & coloring was the real culprit when discussing my curl damage.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
Long story short, I was completely and utterly addicted to dying my hair. Yes I’ve had my hair almost every color and of course I’m obsessed with & have a strong love for Mr. ROYGBIV, lol. But some years ago my desire to dye my hair was overpowered by the simple fact that I would just rather have beautifully epic curls. We all know that curls & bleach have an abusive relationship towards one another, with bleach always winning leaving curls parched & beat-up. Now don’t get me wrong I still dibble & dabble in color but Im more mindful of how frequent and more conservative with any type of color explosions I might have. Also with all the YouTube help available I have been able to learn the power of t-shirt scrunching & pick fluffing.
Top three products and prices?
At the moment the concoction that seems to give me the best results are:
-Cantu Shea Butter Leave-in Conditioning Repair Cream $6
-Curls Unleashed Curl Creme $14
-Cantu Curl Activator Cream $7
Fave go to hairstyle
My fav go to hairstyle is the all mighty wash-n-go (probably cause my attempts at everything else have ended in drastic failures). Not really sure why it’s called that cause it makes it sound, “oh so simple” but the actual process involves quite a few products along with a lot of scrunching, flipping, fluffing, diffusing & surely can’t forget picking to get the desired volume I deem necessary.
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
Milkshake is her name!
Have you tried Hair Shadowing? Deep conditioning color? Splat washables?
No, but I am planning on trying the hair shadowing method to get more blonde highlights without putting my hair through that bleach struggle. I also might partake in some unconventional colors as well since it’s only temporary.
If your hair is colored now what do you use to do so?
I usually just go get a box color every now and then. I definitely try and stay away from salon coloring cause that’s when my curl pattern seems to take a turn for the worst losing all kinds of definition & swivel.
Any advice for the natural newbies?
Embrace your journey it is beyond worth it. Never compare your hair to someone else’s cause believe me even your haircrush got a haircrush.
What was your Favorite compliment you ever received on your hair?
They told me I was their hair inspiration.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger who would it be and why?
It would have to be Naturally Tash simply because she fulfils all my ROYGBIV needs and Taren Guy cause I love her hair shapes & personality.
