Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: RII

Introduction
My name is Rii and I’m 40. I’ve been natural for more than 20 years. I’ve had locs for 11 years and wore a clean shaven bald head for 10 years before I decided to grow locs. I’m a native Washingtonian. My wonderful husband and I have two sons.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
I shaved my head in college. At 19 it wasn’t necessarily a bold move, just one of a rebellious college student.  After I buzzed it, I loved! I kept it until my son (at 9 or 10) told me that he’d never seen me with hair. He asked me to let it grow, and so even at 21 he always refers to my hair as “his” locs.
Top three products and prices.
I’m not a product junkie, my hair is like a weed and will grow under any conditions so a bit of sea breeze and a hot oil treatment go a long way with me. Because my hair is so resistant and strong, I focus on having it washed and retwisted every 3 to 4 weeks. My frizzies can get a bit out of control if I don’t.
Fave go to hairstyle.
Two strand twists is my go-to style. Since I have my hair maintenanced frequently, I love to get two styles out of one. I typically unravel the twist at the 1 1/2 week mark. I’m more about texture than style so the unraveled twists are perfect for me.
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
If I had to give my hair a name??? Ironically, I always refer to it as my wig. But a name… The Thing, definitely The Thing!!
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
I’ve dyed my hair many colors but again because it’s so resistant especially to color it takes significant effort to lift. I’ve committed to jet black for the last 5 years. I use Bigen in oriental black because it doesn’t fade and it covers my gray very well. I dye it twice a year.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
 WELL WORTH IT!!
Any advice to the natural newbies?
My advice to newbies… Be patient and always be confident. Sure, you go through in-between phases and stages that aren’t necessarily your favorite but once you figure it all out, you won’t want to trade your journey for anything.

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

I love it when people say my locs are the perfect size. I have 194 locs and debate combining them often. When people say things like, “I want my locs just like yours” I perceive that as the ultimate compliment.

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
My favorite vlogger is the “Bronze Goddess”. Her looks are soft but edgy, and funky but understated.  I’m probably what you’d consider rocker chic. Raggedy jeans, stilettos, and a graphic tee are my weekend staples, so edgy is where I live! I can always go back to her old tutorials and get new inspiration.image (10)
