Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: Monique

Introduction
My name is Monique, I am 26 years old UGHHH OLDD lol. I currently live in Brooklyn NY. Born and raised in Jamaica, came here when I was 12. I got my bachelors in Health and Safety to be an Restaurant inspector or a Site Safety Manager, but I don’t know what i was thinking because I’m doing neither. I am currently in Nursing school (whoop whoop)- full time student. Last but not least, I’ve ALWAYS BEEN NATURAL= NEVER HAD A PERM/RELAXER/TEXTURIZER/JERRY CURL…nothing just what you see now.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

Since I’ve always been natural, there was no BC or Trans…I wanted to stop cutting my hair and give it a chance to actually grow bc as soon as i got to bra strap length and i saw split ends I would CUT IT! My Last cut was a semi-bob in 2010. I was inspired to be more hair conscious (so to speak) after following @eclark6, @courtneynaturalhair and @simplyyounique

Top three products and prices.

ECO Styler olive oil GEL for sure price range is based on size, but i get the 9.99 tub it lasts forever. My go to moisturizer “right now” is beautiful textures moisture butter whipped curl cream and it’s 6.99 at my local BSS. My third FAVE has to go to my Conditioner AUSSIE MOIST.—OMG to die for…slips on and makes wash day so much easier, and I believe that is 6.49 or so at Target

Fave go to hairstyle.
Fave go to style is a bun of course…I can make one real neat in less than 10 mins. Second favorite is starting to be two flat twist to make a crown braid

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?

Oh her name is Frizzy lol… I asked my BF what style he liked the most one day randomly and he said “FRIZZY”…I was soo confused. He really meant “a twist out”. It was soo funny to me because every female i know HATES FRIZZY hair, but it kind of just stuck.

Have you ever tried hair shadowing? Deep Conditioning Color? Splat washables?

No :/ but i use to rock a really nice color a few years ago called flaming Desire by Textures and Tones. I just posted a TBT last week about it.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
PATIENCE, PATIENCE, PATIENCE.

Any advice to the natural newbies?

I say this three times because I had natural hair before all these fancy products came out, I literally used blue magic grease and kept it moving. Sometimes your hair does what it wants to do, and you have to have patience to handle it. NATURAL HAIR CAN BE TRYING…… Don’t believe the hype in some of these products about instant growth and such, you have to be patient in learning your own hair, what it needs as far as moisture, trimming, styling, etc. Don’t get caught up with “why don’t my hair do that, or why does my hair not look like hers?” That’s because we are all DIFFERENT, AND SO IS OUR HAIR. Don’t be afraid of trial and error, there are many days I did a twist out that turned into a bun bc it looked BADDDD LOL. Don’t be afraid to try products, but do pay attention to ingredients, and if you are on IG, it’s good to seek out PEOPLE who might have similar texture to your hair and see what works for them. Hope this helps.

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

I guy stopped me on the street one day and said “OMG YOUR HAIR IS WHIPPIN” LOL IDK what he meant but he was smiling…that’s my most memorable compliment, so I guess it’s my favorite.

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?

I LOVEEE SIMPLYOUNIQUE!!! I felt like we had similar textures, and her videos got straight to the point with her styles and info. She recently permed her hair then did a second big chop!!. Her Vids are awesome.
