Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: Maci
My name is Maci Smoot I am 22 years old. I am a full time mom and a student at Atlanta Technical College in Atlanta Ga where I study Health Information Technology. I am also the face behind BerryCurly™ on Instagram.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
My mother is actually the person that inspired me to return natural. Perms weren’t doing a good job at straightening my hair so u decided to not get them anymore. I transitioned for about 6 months.
Top three products and prices.
My top three favorite products would have to be Kinky Curly Custard ( the only product that curls my hair) $17.00, As I Am Co Wash ( the only product that allows me to detangle my hair with in five min.) $7.99 and Trader Joes Tingle Shampoo and Conditioner $3.99 each ( I love the smell of these two and they feel amazing on your scalp).
Fave go to hairstyle.
My fave go to hairstyle would have to be a two strand twist out rolled on to perm rods. This hairstyle is super easy to do and I love the fact that this hairstyle gets bigger and bigger as it gets older and I love the compliments I receive every-time I wear this style.
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
If my hair had a name it would have to be red. If anyone in public doesn’t know me and is trying to get my attention they either call me redhead or girl with the red hair lol.
Have you ever tried hair shadowing?
I have tried hair shadowing on my hair before and I love it!! It’s a great way to experiment with color without worrying about the chemical damage.
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
Currently my hair is colored a Pumpkin orange. I usually go to my beautician and he colors it for me. To achieve the red color I wear I just apply a rinse onto my hair. Having orange as the undertone in my hair color just keeps the red very vibrant.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
confusing, aggravating, gorgeous.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
I would tell all natural newbies to be patient. I didn’t know anything about natural hair when I first returned natural. I was really confused. My natural hair journey really became aggravating because I always tried to do exact same hairstyle like the girl on YouTube and it did not turn out the same on my hair. But after a little researching and patience my hair is finally gorgeous how I want it and I am 100% in love with my hair flaws and all. Everyone’s hair is different you just have to study your hair to see what works and what doesn’t work. It took me years to achieve a successful wash n go on my hair. You just have to stay positive, research, and be patient.
What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
A homeless man once told me “baby I love your hair queen it is beautiful”. I get compliments all the time on my hair because of its color and it stands out but that is my favorite compliment of all because it shows that anyone and everyone from all walks of life can stop and give you a compliment regardless of there financial or living stimulation. It’s nice to see people compliment someone regardless of how there life is going.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
Taren Guy. I started my journey off with watching her and she reminded me to stay patient during my journey and I learned the basics about natural hair from her.
