Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: Jareena

Introduction

My name is Jareena Lumpkin, I’m 20 years old, and I stay in the Oakley, CA, which is about 10-15 min away from the Antioch/ Pittsburg area. I’m a full time student at Los Medanos Community College in Pittsburg, CA. and I work part time as a hostess at Red Robin. I’m going to school for nursing, but right now I’m finishing up my General Ed (lower division) classes. I plan on transferring to a California State college nursing program after. I’ve been natural all my life. My mom never put a perm in my hair when I was younger, and I never chose to use a perm as I got older. Even though I didn’t chemically change the texture of my hair, from about the 4th grade up until my first year of college, I applied so much heat that my curl pattern was completely ruined. It got really bad when I learned to flat iron and curl my own hair; it was at its worse from about freshman year until I finally started to take care of it in my first year of college.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

Even though I didn’t transition from chemically treated hair, I would still consider my journey a transition because I went from severe heat damage, to the healthy curls I have now. I had a friend in college who was starting her natural journey, and she was sharing techniques she used, and shared the YouTuber vloggers she watched such as Naptural 85. I was still too into my “straight hair” look to really take heed to any of the valuable information she was sharing with me. I always knew my hair had the potential to have a curl pattern, but I never knew how to get it back. I finally began my own research and stumbled upon Natural Neiicy’s channel. When I learned about deep conditioning, and learned about how damaging heat could be to your natural curl pattern is when it finally sunk in that I needed to start showing my hair love. I began my own no heat challenge in September 2013 and haven’t put heat to my hair since then.

Fave go to hairstyle.

My favorite got to hairstyle is a wash n go, and when I’m not too lazy a twist out. I get my best curls from those two styles.

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?

If I could give my hair a name it would be Roz

If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?

I’ve colored my hair 3 different times since I started my hair journey. Each time was done professionally. The first two times were done at a salon close to home called Wild Orchids in Antioch, CA. My third and most recent time was at Madu Salon in San Francisco, CA, which is a salon that specializes in natural hair.

Any advice to the natural newbies?

My advice is when you make the choice to begin your natural hair journey, stick with it, because even though the journey isn’t always easy, the end results are so worth it! The more love you show to your hair, the more it will love you back!

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?

I love your hair, I wish I could get my hair to look like yours!” This has been my favorite compliment because it gives opportunity to share how they can start their journey and embrace their own natural hair!

If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?

This is a hard question because I have so many favorite youtubers, but I’d have to say natural neiicy, because she is who inspired my to begin my own hair journey. She has a video sharing her own hair journey, and has videos sharing information telling you exactly how to get healthy curls too! Aside from that she’s beautiful and her videos are so well put together that they’re enjoyable to watch.
