Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: Janae Raquel
My name is Janae Raquel and I am from The Garden State known as New Jersey. I am a Natural Hair + Lifestyle Blogger and YouTube personality. This natural journey has a Part 1 and a Part 2. Was natural up until I was about 15. I then hit my hair reset button in 2007.
What or who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
My late grandmother and college friend Francis (RU Alumni) inspired me to go natural. I had been getting so many comments about how I look so much like her (my grandmother), and I believe that everything happens for a reason. They always began with the freckles and then went on to discuss our hair and personalities. I figured, hey, if my hair has the ability, why not let it be? During the time I was relaxed, it was because I was fresh out of my “tom boy” stage, straight hair was the thing like being natural is now. I also stepped into this life because relaxers were something I didn’t want to pay for anymore. I was walking along campus one day, and a friend, Francis was headed to Hill Hall, most likely the computer lab or some English class, and her curls just bounced. I said, “HOW does your hair do that?” She replied “I use a diffuser!” She was natural, her hair was alive, and from that day on, I checked perm sessions with Martha out of my budget. I big chopped after I had been completely natural. My BC Anniversary was September that just passed and I have hair a little below my shoulders. Blessed to have healthy hair. During this point in my life, I felt like I could do anything because my hair was who I was.
Top three products and prices
Hmmm, my top 3 favorite products? I HAVE BUILT A CABINET IN MY BATHROOM, how do I betray the others?! Sigh, my top 3 that I haven’t been able to put down are Deva Curl “Heaven in Hair” Deep Treatment (used as a styler + deep conditioner) priced at $25 bucks, Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Styling Butter for my braid outs priced at $12 bucks, and lastly, Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner priced at $19.99
Fave Go To Style
My favorite go to style when I am short on time is going to be a braid out. I just mastered this look and I haven’t been able to cut it out of my style selection.
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
Rose. Rose is the name of my great great Grandmother, she was picky and made sure her presence was felt, that is exactly if what my hair does. It’s not besties with many products and well, my fro has established its own presence.
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
I used Garnier Truffle + Clairol Beautiful Collection: Dark Brown
What three words could sum up your natural hair journey so far?
True, free, flexible
Any advice to the natural newbies?
If I could pick up the mic right now and ring the alarm to all my naturals, I would tell them, do you on your time, be ready, and get to know your hair. If your friends act up, replace them with conditioner. Texture pin pointing is NOT a must, but at least know your needs to make your transition or your lifestyle as a natural easy by taking the time to get to know your hair!!
What’s your favorite compliment you ever received on your hair?
My biggest compliment wasn’t even words. It was the fact that Tracey Ellis Ross gave it a complete 20 second gaze. Biggest compliment thus far. I love that woman.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on YouTube who would it be and why?
YouTube usually locks me in completely. I could probably watch Naptural85 all day.
