Hello fellow curly heads! My name is Jalen and I’m a 21 year old senior at Providence College. I’m a full-time student, model, and work at a hookah bar. My roots come from the Cape Verde Islands and France. I’ve been natural for about 8 years now after I stopped using relaxers.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
I attended a predominantly white elementary, junior high, and high school so I always wanted my hair straight when I was younger, but once I got into high school I stopped using relaxers. It wasn’t until college when I really embraced my curls. No one really inspired me, I guess as you get older you stop thinking about what others think. You find yourself as you enter new journeys. I didn’t realize that my new journey in New York would not only mark the beginning of my college career but also my natural hair journey. My sophomore year was when I actually started studying the anatomy of my curls. I would literally study the ingredients that I would find in different products to figure out which ones would be right for my hair type (3B). My roommate was really the who told me i needed to cut out my heat damage so she held me down and just chopped away(That’s why she’s my girl, she knew my head looked a mess and she took care of it). I started using my flat iron less and less. My curls came back to life and the thickness of my hair just kept multiplying. Now, I will straighten my hair maybe at the most 2 times a year. I didn’t Big chop however, I cut a lot of hair in the front off and my hair easily transitioned because the heat damage wasn’t too bad.

If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
I live near the beach and was outside everyday this summer so right now it is lightened from the sun.
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Fast, liberating, worthwhile
Any advice to the natural newbies?
When using oil, make sure you moisturize first and then put the oil on top or after to seal it in. Oil is a sealant, therefore it is not going to moisturize on its own. The status of your hair, oil will only enhance and make last longer, so if your hair is dry oil will seal in the dryness! No bueno! If you have to do the big chop do it. Whether you have to cut 2 inches or 9 inches of hair you’re beautiful no matter what. YOU and your pretty little face will always stay the same. Your hair is just an accent, so if you need some accessories go to the mall and pick up a cute necklace. Plus straight ends are never cute. Remember, healthy hair is beautiful hair.
What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
“Excuse me, girl I love your hair. Would you be willing to cut it? I will pay you good money for it. I want to make it into a weave.” When I found out my hair was “weave-worthy” I knew my babies were poppin haha.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
I don’t really watch that many videos anymore, however when I did I would watch Sun Kissed Alba because she is real. She would never throw shade on a brand, however she wouldn’t promote them just for money or deals. Whatever she promotes through her videos she actually uses. She seems very authentic.
Finish This Sentence:
I Rock My Natural because this is the head God gave me. Plus they’re pappppinnnn’ and free!
