Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: Frankie

Hey Curls! I’m Frankie Monroe from Houston TX. I’m a stay at home mommy to 2 amazing kids. I have been rocking my natural hair since 2010.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you BC or transition?
I have tried to go natural since my preteen years and have big chopped several times before it was coined a term. First time I was forced into going natural after visiting my father side of the family for the summer. My aunt took a look at my hair and saw so much breakage that she grabbed the scissors before I could ask “What are you doing?” She said she was “Just giving me a trim” but the mirror told me a completely different story. I was mortified when I saw all my hair was gone and the only hair that remained was my natural texture. Imagine a 13 year old who goes to a predominately white school, who had serious issues with self esteem forced to sport a twa. I was clueless on how to take care of it and all she did was give me a pick and told me to pick it out. I thought afros were for the 70’s and that wasn’t my thing. I ran back to the relaxer as soon as I got back home for school.  Through the years I really became curious of my natural texture and I would go for it just to get discouraged. There weren’t any helpful blogs like this one or videos to watch to get me started. Finally after having my first child and seeing her beautiful hair I decided to take the lunge. How was I going to teach her confidence in her hair when I wasn’t in mine.  I didn’t want her to have the same self esteem issues I had with my hair growing up so I chopped it off one night shortly after having this epitome..  I’m so incredible happy I did too.

Have you ever tried hair shadowing? Deep Conditioning Color? Splat washables?
I add Purple Dye to my conditioner to tone my hair every 6 weeks. I plan on trying many vivid colors soon.
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
My hair is bleached and toned. The bleach I used is called ‘BlondeMe’ and I tone with Manic Panic’s Ultra Violet
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
adventurous, centering, invigorating
Any advice to the natural newbies?
Most changes that are worth making are difficult in the beginning. Don’t give up and stay encouraged. Most importantly, have patience and in time you will figure out your hair and what it needs to thrive.
What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
I appreciate all compliments from others who feel compelled to say something to me. My favorite compliment was more of the expression than the words. While shopping a woman came up to me and told me with such delight and excitement, “Your hair is fierce!!”. That energy she gave me made my day!
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
I actually haven’t watched too many vloggers enough to say I have a favorite. I do enjoy most popular natural hair vloggers from time to time.

I Rock My Natural because it is FIERCE!!!
