Tell me a little about yourself.

My name is Emilia; my friends call me Emm. I’m 29 years old. Originally from the Caribbean island of Dominica but reside in Miami, FL. I am a college professor who specializes in adolescent identity research. I have been natural for one year, this September 11 th.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?

I had my last relaxed in February, 2013. Initially, it wasn’t my plan to go natural but after wearing protective styles from March, it just made sense. I workout 5-6 days a week and constantly having to manipulate my hair after was becoming time consuming and annoying.

3. Top three products and prices.

My favorite product and one I swear my hair can’t live without is Ecostyler Argan oil gel. At $3 for a 16 oz jar, can’t really go wrong. Another fave would be VO5 Strawberry Smoothie conditioner. It has great slip, smells yummy, and it’s $1 per bottle. Hmmm, 3rd go-to product, pure coconut oil. I recently purchased the Parachute brand. It was $7 for the bottle. I love that stuff! I add some to my hair after styling and it leaves it feeling so soft.

4.Fave go to hairstyle.

Most people who have been following my natural journey know me for using the shingling technique. It has been my fave since after my big chop however, recently I did my first wash-n-go and I’m loving that too.

Have you tried hair shadowing?
If yes, what do you think?
If no, would you?

I haven’t tried hair shadowing but I would love to try it someday. It looks so cool and a great technique for adding color without the commitment or potential hair damage.

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.

That’s tough. Hmmm “Best Decision Ever!”

Any advice to the natural newbies?

Love YOUR hair! I know some of us start our journeys expecting our hair to look like our favorite naturals who we follow on social media. What I had to learn quickly was that my hair may not look like that person’s and that’s all right. Once you embrace yours, the journey becomes much more enjoyable and liberating.

Finish this sentence:
I Rock My Natural because

I Rock My Natural because through this journey, I have learnt and grown in ways I never anticipated.
