Natural Rockers You May Not Know But Should: désharie
My name is DéSharie (day-shuh-ree) but people call me Daye though. I live in Greensboro, NC where I graduated from UNCG with a BA in Sociology. I’m currently employed in the criminal justice field and I’m also making some things happen in the fashion realm.

What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
I began my natural hair journey in 2011 when I was a Junior in college. It sort of happened unplanned when I sustained a head injury and did not feel comfortable getting a relaxer due to the scar so I started transitioning from there. At first I would just roller set my hair and straighten, then very slowly, but surely my texture changed, I figured out a moisture routine, and I fell in love with protective styling.
Top three products and prices.
1. As I Am Coconut Cowash ($8-10)
2. As I Am Moisture Milk ($14-17)
3. The Tangle Teezer: Salon Elite Hair Brush ($9) [i don’t know if this counts, but my breakage and shedding have DRASTICALLY decreased–I’m talking from tennis/baseball sized wads to now grape size]
Fave go to hairstyle.
My favorite “go to style” are crotchet braids by my lovely stylist DeAnna (www.styleseat.com/DeAnnaPruitt). I use the Model Model Water Wave hair and leave a bit of my hair out for a side part and it blends perfectly for me–this leave out isn’t for everyone though. In addition to how amazing and real it looks, this is my “go to” because it’s very low maintenance yet last 3-5 weeks. Also I can cleanse and moisturize my scalp as needed!
If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
If had to name my hair I would name her Reign because I believe my hair is my crown and my I treat her as such. It is my pride and glory, and it just makes a statement about myself without me having to speak.

Have you ever tried hair shadowing?
I have recently tried hair shadowing and I love it! I’ve always wanted bold highlight colors in my hair but I have a professional image to maintain Mon-Fri so it gives me a chance to express myself on the weekends.
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
The best way to describe my hair color is a beautiful concoction of some beige, some copper, some brown, and some grey. I get my hair colored professionally by Ms. Chez (www.instagram.com/ochezere). She uses Paul Mitchell with balayage, ombré, and smudging techniques. I’m obsessed with grey hair and I’m anxious about our next appointment so I can add more!

Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Stressful but beautiful.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
I have two pieces of advice for the newbs. First is to find a moisturizing routine that is best for your hair and keep your receipts! I’m a product junkie and when I found it I could return things I did not like I saved $100s. It will take a lot of trial and error because what works for one natural may not work for the next. For me I like very light oils on my scalp but cream based products for my hair shafts. Secondly, please take your time to detangle and do not rake through your hair. If you have a knot, stop and detangle it! I cringe when I hear people tearing through their hair. I personally love the Tangle Teezer but if a Denman or detangling comb suits you better, go for it.

What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
“Is that all your hair?!” is probably my favorite compliment. I know my hair is thick but the affirmation still brings a smile to my face. From there people typically ask me what I do to it and I love to motivate people to take care of their mane.
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
If I could only watch one blogger it would be Natural Neiicey. She embodies everything I love about natural hair and the versatility. Her videos are easy to follow. I also love her smile and style!
