My name is Deidra Butler I will be 30 years old on November 21st. I currently reside in Yardley Pennsylvania a little bit outside of Philly. I am a personal shopper/image consultant as well as a freelance bridal makeup artist, I also sing in a wedding band based out of north jersey/ny. I have been natural for at least 15 years but I’ve had my Locs for about 10-11 years.
What or Who inspired you to go natural? Did you bc or transition?
The main reason I decided to go natural was because I no longer enjoyed going to the hairdressers sitting and waiting for hours on end just to most of the change my hairstyle once I got home. It was tedious and expensive! I wanted healthy hair. So I did big chop and back then there wasn’t all these wonderful videos and tutorials that we have access to nowadays so it was harder then to deal. The only thing I need to do was to refresh my curls everyday lol I have a mixed curl pattern so then as well I knew nothing about hair type so I had to go with the flow until my hair grew out and I started getting it straightened. That was the main factor in my decision to get LOCS, I already loved how they looked and I didn’t want to continue to get my hair straightened so again there wasn’t the information out then that there is now so crochet braids, & such weren’t an option I do not regret my decision though, I love my locs dearly & people would say I wouldn’t get them bc I liked to change my hair so much but I’ve proven that just bc I have Locs it hasn’t stopped me from experimenting with wigs, crochet braids, yarn braids, kinky twist etc.
Top three products and prices.
Funny enough I’ve never been nor am I currently a product junky.. I keep it very simple, a spray bottle with water & essential oils is really all I use, (coconut oil, jamaican black castor oil, peppermint oil) all found in local stores for under $5 each.
Fave go to hairstyle.
I have a few favorite go to hairstyles I love doing the crochet braids with marley hair by having my locs braided down. Also pipecleaner curls bc the curls last until I wash my hair! And doing a faux bob while my hair is still curly whether the curls are tight or loose. If you had to give your hair a name what would it be?
The name for my hair would be Chameleon lol between hair color changes and experiments for a person who has long locs I am not limited for different looks.
If you hair is colored what do you use to do so?
While my hair was red I would use textures & tones Red Hot (it’s been red for about 3 yrs), now that I’ve recently changed it to blue of course I had to lighten it and I used Manic Panic shocking Blue as well as Ion Color Brillance In Sky Blue (1manic panic jar, and 3-4 boxes of ion)
Sum up your natural hair journey in three words.
Any advice to the natural newbies?
It’s a process, stay with the process, enjoy the process, learn from the process, but more importantly not one persons hair is like the next so don’t have expectations of what someone else’s hair or process may be.
What was favorite compliment someone has ever given you on your hair?
“Your hair is so cool and interesting, it’s like a work of art!” -true story lol
If you could only watch one natural hair vlogger on youtube who would it be? why?
Funny enough I don’t watch many hair vloggers I randomly go on YouTube and type in what I’m looking for, its never the same person and it’s mainly for reference.
