Ask Tash: Most Asked Questions From Instagram & FB
I get asked a lot of questions on my social media accounts about the various hair coloring techniques that I use and do. Here are a few of the most asked questions and my answers:
~Do you use bleach?
No never! I use two natural techniques to pre-lighten my hair. Honey and cinnamon treatments which will naturally lighten your hair over time. You will NOT see a big color change after one treatment so its best to do them every other week for at least 2-3 months to really bring your hair to a lighter color. The other treatment that I use is mixing vitamin c powder and dandruff shampoo to lighten my hair. This treatment will also strip all temporary color out of your hair( I use it especially to remove deep conditioning color) and if you hair is dark it will lighten your hair gradually over time. I have posts on both these methods and they can be found under the deep conditioning color tab.
~How do you color you hair so much without causing any damage?
I never use any type of permanent hair color. The only hair color techniques that I use are all temporary and will wash out. Deep conditioning color will take longer to wash out than hair shadowing or temporary color sprays. I also deep condition every time I wash my hair and I heat my condish up before I use it by putting it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
~How do/did you get your hair to grow so much in 3 years?
I didn’t bc, I transitioned. When I began transitioning I was already natural but I had killed my curl pattern by constantly flat ironing my hair and using harsh dyes. Also my hair was shoulder length when I began. To restore my hair I gave up heat, did protein treatments twice a month and deep conditioned my hair every time I washed it. I only wore bantu knots outs until my natural curl pattern returned and allowed me to wear washngo’s again. I also took hairfinity hair vitamins for about 6 months and I believe that helped speed along my hair growth as well. To this day I still use no heat and really only wear washngo’s with the occasional blow out or rod set. Drinking lots of water and eating right will also aid in healthy hair growth as well.
~Where can you buy the temporary spray hair color products that you use?
I only use two kinds which are Jerome Russell and Beyond the Zone. Jerome Russell can be found in Walgreens or online at both ebay and amazon. I’m sure there are many other places to find it online and a simple google search will help you. As far as the Beyond the Zone Temporary color spray the only place that I know of to get it from is Sally’s Beauty Supply. They also have a website if you prefer to find it online.
~How do you get your curls so defined?
Over time I have come to find that its all about the product. My curls tend to have mind of their own and different products sometimes produce a different curl. My current favorite is Taliah Waajid Curl Sealer. If you check out my post entitled Updated Washngo method you will see exactly how I use it and how it defines my curls
~When you use the temporary color sprays how can you avoid your hair feeling crunchy or hard?
The key to using the temporary color sprays is to not spray the color in the same spot too much. The more you do so the harder you hair may feel when the color dry’s. Also once the color dry’s it is best to either pick your hair or pull the curls apart to get all the access color to flake off and have less bleeding or flaking later. Also it is best to put all the hair products you need to use in your hair prior to spraying the color. If you decide to put in any product after you spray your hair count on it to get all over your hands. Regardless of what you do you will feel the hair color in your hair as you would using any temporary color methods such as hair shadowing, splat washables, and the temporary color sprays.
~What is your real hair color?
My real color is like a dark brown/light brown mix
~Do you have to lighten your hair to do hair shadowing?
No. Hair shadowing will work on any color hair. However the colors may look different depending on your hair color. For example if your hair is black and you use a blue color you will see the blue but it may look a darker blue than it would look if your hair was light brown or blond.
~Will deep conditioning color work on dark or black hair?
Yes and No. First it depends on the color you are trying to go. If you hair is black or dark brown and your trying to go red it will not work. If you are trying to do like a blue, purple or dark burgundy color it will give you those color highlights especially in bright light or the sun. If you want to achieve a bright color when using deep conditioning color you could use one of the natural hair methods I talked about earlier to pre lighten your hair.
~If I use the honey cinnamon treatments or vitamin c method to lighten my hair will my hair return back to its original color?
No. Both of these methods will permanently lighten your hair.
