Artists Who Rock: Ashley Straker
My name is Ashley Straker, based in London, UK.
Type of Art you are known for:
I am mostly known for my portraits, more specifically my ‘Afro series’ paintings, which are fictional characters inspired by African/ Caribbean culture. My style of work is more towards realism, but I don’t go to into extreme detail as long as the painting is believable then I am satisfied. I enjoy painting landscapes also, I tend to switch between that and portraiture.
What/ Who Inspires you?
Everything around me inspires me, I always make an conscious effort to visually absorb my surroundings. I think reading is very important for generating ideas and concepts, I read a lot of spiritual books and try to incorporate that into my work. My main motivation is simply to improve and achieve on a daily basis, as artists I believe we should be never completely happy with the level we at. There is always something we can improve on, that applies to life in general too.
How long have you been an artist?
I have been drawing since I was little but only took it more seriously when I was in my last year of college and did a BA Honours degree in Animation, which was a very important time for me to experiment with various styles and types of art. So roughly I would say about 4/5 years.
Do you have a fave artist? If so who?
In terms of inspiration I look at a lot of concept artists and Illustrators, such as Feng Zhu, Jeff Simpson and James Zapata. To styles that are completely different to mine such as Japanese animator Takeshi Koike. I love fashion photography especially woman of colour, anything graceful and has a sense meaning.
Has any of your art been published? If so where?
No where major… Yet
If you could sum up your art in three words what would they be?
